Peter, The most effective roll I remember was a one handed slapping and prying roll with a forward recovery using the hull while inverted. I was a lurker at the class and was surprised at the number of paddlers who were able to emulate Dubside's recovery after one example. I was still recovering at that point from complete humiliation in Dubside's previous one on one class where I was seeking help with my forward recovery rolls. I was a victim of geriatric inflexibilty and couldn't pull it off no matter what.

Dubside's inventive rolls were a demonstration that if you can get your CG near to the CB of the kayak you have a good chance of recovery. He claims that he has an advantage because the beam of his Feathercraft allows him to spread his knees and kiss the deck in contrast to the straight legged Greenlander technique which requires extraordinary hamstring flexibility to do the same thing. His point is much like the one whitewater paddlers use.

FWIW, the same intensity that enables Dubside to invent rolls that extend the Greenland repetoire also is demonstated in his athletisicm. Despite his long dreadlocks tucked in his pants he also does the somewhat painful Greenland rope exercises with grace.

I sorry that I can't provide more details but from my experience of being nearly effortless with the layback rolls ( including handrolls ) is that if you can get near the deck you'll come up no matter what. I assume the same is true if you kiss the deck.
