I am in a Toyota truck.  So I normally leave the paddle connected in the 
pickup bed.  Once at the house, I disassemble the paddle and store in 
the garage.  Last spring it refused to separate.  My Werner camano 
paddle did the same thing several years earlier.  After a month or two 
it was able to take apart again.  This Werner Kauiau (Spelling??) stayed 
suck and refused to separate.  But it is apart now
