I use my Garmin GPS in a clear map case. Works just fine. The GPS says
dry even though the case gets wet. The case does make it slightly harder
to read the display but its not a real problem.

The weather channel story showed to kayaks. A sit on top yellow boat that
was part of the dramatization well after the fact. The rescue was filmed
and they showed a foldable kayak. They mentioned that during the storm
his sail was damaged and unusable. The film show what looked to be a sail
on the bow on the boat so I assume the footage was of the rescue.

They did say that the boat was blown over once but he managed to stay with
the kayak and get back inside. He was using a cell phone to make multiple
contacts with the USCG. My GPS is far more water tight than my cell
phone. If his cell phone survived a GPS should have as well. They did
show him removing the phone from a couple of ziplock bags.

It sure seems that if he had GPS and a compass he would have been rescued
sooner.

Later,
Dan McCarty
