One of the trade magazines we get here at work is called 'GPS World' and the Feb. issue has a good article about using GPS to monitor kayak training performance. Each cycle corresponds to a stroke of the paddle: when the athlete inserts the paddle into the water and pushes it backward, the boat plunges and gains speed, and when the paddle is taken out of the water in order to be brought forward, the boat rises out of the water and loses speed. ..."
