Wouldn't they make it much harder to de-ice your deck, such as with some blows with the side of a fist, if the ice had too many things, like deck lines, to get a good hold on. But, in the nine years of winter paddling here on Lake Michigan, the only time this has been a problem has been with really tight decklines. Mine are loose enough that when necessary a gloved hand has always been able to grab and hold. They aren't so loose that they hang over the side though, but they have caught the "lip" of my hatch cover and caused it to pop up a bit. Those of us who paddle in the winter here, do practice cold water rescues in the conditions we paddle in--we know our gear and our bodies will work if we need to do it for "real".
