Came to the discussion late, but had to throw my two cents in. Bring back
the rain gutters! They are much better than factory rail racks because you can
move the racks back and forth over just about the entire roof. Perfect for
changing the distance to accomadate an Arctic Hawk, or a Tchaika, or a queen
size mattress and box spring. My last vehicle was a Jeep Cherokee, maybe the
finest kayak carrying vehicle ever made: gutters whole length of roof for wide
adjustment, roof not too high to get them up there, but still a capable four by
four with plenty of clearance, straight six with plenty of low end tourque,
thousands less than comparable vehicles.

Finally wore out the Cherokee. Now have Jeep Liberty (with Yakima cross
bars). Still a couple thou less than comparable vehicles, but: Roof is too
high, wife can no longer help get the boats up. Factory rack rails only cover
about three quarters of length of roof (why is this???), not providing the
spread I like for the AH (fine for Tchaika). It works, but not nearly as good as
the Cherokee. And forget the queen size mattress and box spring.

They also make fitting of rack legs easier. And they make doors more
rain-proof. It must have been some designers' plot against us, consumers,
with all this gutter-less models :-)
