I often develop cramps or spasms on whitewater runs in hot weather. Takes about 10 miles or so, then I've probably altered my electrolyte balance significantly. Maintaining hydration alone is not quite enough. I often use 1/2 strength Gatorade and it helps somewhat. A nurse friend suggests using a puree of Orange Juice and Bananas to keep up sodium & potassium levels and that seems to help too.
