Hi folks,

I'm considering the purchase of one of those 'fuzzy rubber' long sleeved
shirts for paddling in this summer. Anyone got any recommendations on which
brands to buy, which to avoid? Or are they not worth getting at all?

Thanks in advance!

Michael

Vickie and I have ones from Lotus. Your post reminded me that we have them,
and that it is about the time of year to start wearing them again.
We really like ours and use them almost exclusively for surfing and rock
gardening in spring and fall. Very comfortable.
By comparison I have a wet suit top that I made by cutting off the top half
of a 3/2 surf we suit. For surfing the fuzzy rubber is warmer because it
blocks wind better, and less water gets in around my neck when rolling or
getting hammered. The WS top is probably warmer for prolonged immersion.
I don't recommend them for touring unless it is cold and/or windy. They are
just too warm.

A paddling friend with whom I do a lot of trips bought an NRS long sleeved
fuzzy rubber top
a year ago, (http://www.nrsweb.com/shop/product.asp?pfid=2236&deptid=942)
and now seems to use it almost exclusively. A thermal goes under it in
winter.
Seems to work very well, I intend to get one. You need to put a windproof
over it when stopping on a windy beach, to slow the evaporative cooling. The
top seems flexible enough to paddle all day in, whereas a wetsuit neoprene
top makes you paddle against elastic stretch. I use a neo top for surfing
sessions, when I know there'll be a fair bit of submarine activity.
Cheers, PT.
