Joe P said; "That is very much a problem that can occur on any trip. I often develop cramps or spasms on whitewater runs in hot weather. Takes about 10 miles or so, then I've probably altered my electrolyte balance significantly. Maintaining hydration alone is not quite enough. I often use 1/2 strength Gatorade and it helps somewhat. " I coached and played soccer for about twelve years. I had a problem with calf cramps due to the heat while playing. Augusta GA is hot and humid in the summer. I coached a Classic (Traveling Team) and had problems with my players cramping. While at a National Coaches clinic at The University of South Carolina, I learned from a college trainer how they combated cramps during spring training for football. They had tried all kind of variations of sport drinks with little to no success. Somehow they came up with this formula: The juice of one half of a lemon, one-eighth teaspoon of salt to one half gallon cold water. After I started using this formula on myself and my team, cramps became almost nonexistent. I can't tell you why it works, but it does. I have passed this on to others who swear by it now. All I can say is try it. At first you may not like the taste, but it grows on you.
