Hi all, I wonder if any of you local to the area can explain why my sandals have a very "earthy" smell after I paddled Mission Bay a couple weeks ago. I landed once on either side of Fiesta Island (avoided the Least Tern area) and one time on the beach at the far northwest corner near the park. I didn't get too mucky, but of course some. It was low tide at the time. I'm currently on my second Chlorox soak, upping the concentration this time. Any tips on ridding them of the smell? I've had them on in various swamps and mangroves in SW Florida as well as a major Red Tide event, with no similar effects. Odd. Hi All, Any "local" tips for kayaking the estuaries around Sanibel Island or Ft. Myers, Florida? Also any outfitter tips, too, because we need to rent kayaks. We're going this weekend. Check out Goodland! It's what's left of Old Florida and a cheap place to stay. Great access to 10000 Islands. Gary -- You might check out the 'Great Calusa Blueway' info online at http://www.greatcalusablueway.com. It's touted as the brand new canoe and kayak trail in the Ft. Myers/Sanibel area. I haven't paddled it, but it looks interesting. I was in the area in late December, and we paddled among manatees in the Orange River from a put-in spot at Lee County Manatee Park. There's a Florida Power and Light discharge canal that feeds into the river, and the manatees overwinter there. Not sure if they'd still be hanging around in April, but there's a chance. And you can call the park. There's contact information at http://www.leeparks.org/. The park also rents double sit-on-tops and gear.
