Hi

Does anyone have comments or experience with the ATTWOOD Water-Buster
Battery-Powered Pump as seen in latest West Marine Catalog
http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?keyword=4
47235&resultCt=1&storeId=10001&catalogId=10001&productId=39703&y=8&x=22 I
plan to use it in conjunction with hand pumps to help with the pump-out. I
have a Nautiraid Grand Raid II 520.

Thanks

Michel Charlebois

I think hardshells are using these pumps more often than folders. I watched
a discussion of these pumps a while ago (here or at Guillemot, not sure),
then decided that don't need it so far. With a hardshell there is little
need, at least for my uses, and with a folder installation details weren't
clear (fixed to the bacrest rib, perhaps). Their capacity is much, much
higher than hand pumps, only you'll have to recharge a battery after every
1-2 uses. Australians have this or similar pump as a standard in some
hardshell model.

G'Day,

I used an Attwood on my Klepper. It was fitted in the cockpit beneath my
legs using two long strips of velcro, which looped through the pump carry
handle and under the wooden "backbone" of the boat and then back through the
handle. It was an effective and easily removed setup, but I don't know if it
applies to other folders.

Hadn't realised you could still buy Attwood pumps. Good to know they are
still available

All the best, PeterO

My only comment is that with a 200 gph capacity, it will take quite a
while to empty a big kayak (when I hear Nautiraid, I think big).
You could rig up a 625 gph Atwood with an external battery pack for a
bit more money,

Mike

Michel,

I have one installed in my Nordkapp. It is a fairly low volume pump that in
conjunction with my high volume legs, takes up to 4 minutes to completely empty
my boat. Usually it takes 1-2 minutes. The problem is that my switch is on
the unit and I've not rigged one for the exterior of the boat. That means I have
to undo my spray skirt to turn it off. It will run up to 5 hours on one set
of D cell batteries so one may take their own sweet time about it.

My backup is a very large mesh bag of sponges that moves water very quickly.
Sometimes I carry a handpump. I regularly inspect the unit for signs of wear
on the motor. Attwood warrants the pump for a year and due to the constant
humidity I find the pump lasts a year and then performance is sketchy.

A few things: First; take some silicone and completely coat the exterior of
the switch booty so water will not intrude between the rubber of the switch
booty and the pump body. Second; Coat the wires internal to the pump as they can
corrode from humidity. Thirdly; make sure your outtake hose can remove water
without water getting back in.

I agree with Michael Daly that other electric pumps might be better suited to
a Nautiraid as it is a very high volume boat that a Waterbuster and a pair of
handpumps would really struggle to remove water from. The Aussie/Kiwi
electric pump cartel are very helpful in this regard.

They have a really great electric pump rig that I will probably make myself
this summer.

Cheers,

Rob G
