I recently contacted Garmin about replacing the badly corroded contacts in my eTrex Summit. I had started off using a pencil eraser to clean them, but gradually escalated to more aggressive corrosion removal, such as a small screwdriver blade, as the corrosion got to the point where the eraser trick didn't work any more. Even though the warranty had probably expired a year before, they sent me a brand new replacement for free within days of receiving my old one. Granted, it would have been nice if the gold-plating on the contacts was a little more durable in the first place, but it's hard to find fault with this kind of service! Now if only Ritchie was equally supportive of their deck compasses [mine has a very slow leak (maybe one half teaspoon per year) allowing the water-filled compartment to drip out] I'd be a happy(ier) camper!
