It's not actual "surgery", being more of a "invasive procedure." However,
the US statistics include a 2% "sudden death" risk. Fortunately, Victoria is
a world-class leader, performing a couple a day, year round (we have an aged
population, with a lotta A-fib here on the southern part of Vancouver
Island).

I'm a bit embarrassed with these posts, given there are those on this list
with lotsa health issues too that never whine, but thanks for the kind
thoughts. I try to only surround myself with positive thoughts and people
these days.

Something you said a couple a months ago has stuck in my craw though. You
said something to the effect of not delaying a desired trip to Alaska to
anyone wishing to paddle up there "one day", lest health concerns overtake
the individual. I don't think I'll be "complete" until I've paddled some of
its outer shores (since reading some of your trip reports/stories, thanks
BOB). My father remains are up there (we sent his ashes, as he was headed
there for the first time in 1969 and died of a heart attack just as he was
leaving the tarmac of San Francisco airport (at age 46, my age this year). I
dislike genetic preordination, doesn't seem fair.

So, the message in all this health stuff is still paddle-related. Get out
there, and do it now. I'll cc the list.

Doug,
In addition to family and friends let me give you something to look forward
too and live for. (In my experience this helps "invasive procedure "
patients recover faster.). WHY DON'T YOU COME UP HERE AND JOIN ME FOR A
SEAKAYAK TRIP IN THE SUMMER OF 2005?
If we start talking about the trip now that will help get your blood pumping
( good exercise for your heart to help it recover).
I have got a couple interesting places I keep looking at on the maps we can
talk about. How about it.
Keeping you in our prayers
Bob

Hi Doug,
I just joined the group and am unsure as to all the protocol, but jumped in
the middle of the messages about your heart surgery. Hope it's okay to mail
direct. I just had a heart procedure for A. Flutter/A.Fib. (right atrium
ablation via catheters. All went well. Had the procedure on Wednesday and
was out on the ocean paddling the following Sunday. I'm back to
work(carpentry)and all seems well(no drugs even). If this is similar to your
upcoming event, I was basically awake for the whole 2 3/4hour session so if
you have any questions feel free to write.

 Good luck, ernest
