The lack of a rudder had nothing to do with that. I'll bet Paul had to repair his (a very substantial rudder) many times in his circumnavigation of Australia. Paul used a slip over the stern fiberglass skeg in his circumnavigation of the South Island of NZ. Chris certainly could have used a kayak with stronger seams and a tougher hull then but had he had a rudder he likely would have to had gotten that repaired or replaced as well. As in some cases I've seen, when banged into rocks or rear endered in surf the rudder may actually break (lever) off the end of the stern where the pin or mounting bolts go into the kayak.
