Dave flipped it back, and a game was born. We use a sponge now, preferably several of them, due to the sketchy availability of the real deal, but the sudden death nature of the competition remains almost as frenetic as when the missile was rotten. If a canoe collects a sponge, that paddler is eliminated from the game. The winner is the last one on the water who has not allowed a sponge in her boat. Sponges / fish may be plucked from the water and thrown only by the paddle. Touching the sponge with hands brings instant disqualification. Boat ramming, paddle slashing or timid weed-skulking requires the application of the standing rule: the offending paddler must stand. Particularly when played with two or three sponges, Dead Fish Polo is an intense game. Fast acceleration, braking, and heeling to present the high side of the canoe to the sponge thrower while turning on a dime are valued skills.
