It was kind of fun to really evaluate my rudder a little closer on the outer
shores in the steeper, fast paced waves. There's a P&H dealer in Sooke Basin
(on the inside) near where I launched on the 6/27 trip. I was out there
Sunday in the Basin with a paddler friend, new to kayaking (a recovering
brain injury cyclist I knew previously from the medical profession). We
spent some time in the westerlies (she hadn't been in waves much before), as
well as in some protected, gentle coves with moving water entrances. I also
helped her to learn how to skull over on her side - something she doesn't
get much exposure to with the club paddles of late. With all that, we ran a
bit late returning , otherwise I was going to try out a P&H Quest -- and
give it's skeg a try. I'm not sure how well behaved the Quest is, but assume
it has a loose stern which will allow me to evaluate weathercocking and lee
cocking comparisons with my Nordkapp. I haven't actually paddled a skegged
kayak in wind, ever, so I'll try to get out in some rough stuff with it
shortly, though I can't do any really rough stuff until my underarm jacket
rash heals from the harsh paddle on 6/27 (still VERY sore, dang).

It's also kind of fun to utilize the windsurfer net's information,
especially as they tend to windsurf north or south of Race Rocks, but not
actually in the vicinity where the real wind is:

I'll be trying some 40 knot westerly runs soon, but with the flood (as
opposed to the more dangerous ebb). As I have a rudder, I don't think I'm
allowed to participate in the CoyoteCo Columbia River runs they do in high
winds, but heck, open water, solo, is way more fun anyway (sorry Mitch, just
kidding!).
