For anyone planning a kayak trip to southeast Alaska this summer a huge concentration of Humpback whales is feeding off the North shore of Kupreanoff Island between the village of Kake and Protage Bay to the East. Estimates are up to 100 whales, the highest concentrations seen in five years. The for kayakers, the state ferry runs to Kake and the main concentration of whales is near Big Creek about 25 miles East of there. Appearently a shallow shelf provides excellent feeding groundsa there. My son and I plan to check it out in mid august. I am sure we will come back with a whale of a tale. happy whaling Bob *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
