Actually, MORE people lived on the coast in those days than do now. There were scattered settlements, logging shows, canneries, fishing outposts, etc. As for running out of food and water: On this coast? In summer? Salmon and bottom fish galore, shellfish for the taking (although a bit risky in summer), berries ashore. Any water would be fit to drink straight from the creek. It was quite the feat, but it may well have been more idyllic than we think.
