Once an official in the instructor certification program that I worked in, stated that instructors who couldn't roll were unsafe instructors. The fact that I was a canoeist didn't matter at all... I agree that rolling is good way to learn bracing. But on the other hand, the way that bracing is normally taught here is so limited, that it is obvious (to me) that most paddlers will not learn to brace properly from that kind of training. For canoeists there is little choice and I think that there are good training methods to learn to brace well without rolling.
