You are probably trying to muscle yourself up with your upper body rather than rotating the boat up with your lower body. You can tell if your hips are working by doing a bow dip off someone's boat. If you are using you lower body, the bow of boat should barely move up and down in the water. If you are muscling then you will end up pushing down on the boat.
