This talk of worrying about woodworking skills brings this to mind - one builder I talked to limits his final sanding - he leaves runs and drips. His theory is that he wants a functional boat and if it starts not looking perfect then he won't worry about the details and won't worry about scratching it and adding character on every paddle. I guess that is one approach.
