A good point. Possiby because until recently designers could not protect
their designs. Another possible reason may be that boat design is a bit
"artsy" and like writing or painting requires a diffrnet kind of protection.

Quite the contrary. There exist an infinite number of possibilities of which
all have merits and differences. Since we have not produced anywhere close
to an infinte number of designs a lot of room remains for new approaches.
Furthermore the design of a boat need not contain any innovations. It may,
however, combine well known elements in a unique manner.
