Here's a cool way to do recessed deck fittings on a home-built kayak deck. Interior bumps would be minimal, compared to the commercial ones that include a bolt/screw protuberance, with nut, added to the already existing intrusion of the interior bump. Matt rightly observes they can be a pain.
