I rarely paddle at night but use a small, waterproof very bright hand-held light that is attached to a headband. There are a few different headbands available, I think. Mine is from Campmor, called a Jakstrap and is about $5. I like that it is compact, so it fits in a pfd pocket and there are no wires to go bad as on many headlamps.
