If you are looking for a very cost effective series of plant/animal ID books - check out the "Finder" series: http://home.att.net/~naturebooks/finders.html Notice that they have a Track Finder book - and about 20 others. All of these are small - and only $3 or $4 each. They work quite well - most are set up as dichotomous keys - which are very simple to navigate. You won't find lots of pretty color photos (line drawings only) but hey, for < $5 you wouldn't expect more. Usual disclaimer, I don't know them nor do I own the company....
