>>>>>Rick.Sylvia_at_ferguson.com> Subject: [Paddlewise] Staking tents in gravel Have you guys had to camp on 1 foot thick gravel? How did you stake the tent?<<<<< Although I like your idea about taking bags that you fill with the gravel to use as "dead men", what I've used in this situation is a very low tech option that was in vogue back in the 50's, ie steel spikes. Today's light weight tents have totally gone with light weight, and usually expensive, aluminum stakes (which, as you know bend easily). However, steel spikes are actually cheaper, never bend (well, maybe if you took a sledge hammer to one), and - who cares about a little extra weight in a kayak? It helps to sort of screw them into the gravel. Here's a fun video of the slalom course in the Athens Olympics. You can see it just before they put water in it, and then a few distant shots of paddlers playing in it. I wish I could put something like that in my back yard :-)) http://www.canoeicf.com/slalom/committee/news/news2004/athen2004_course_web_ 2.wmv Scott So.Cal. *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s). large, galvanized nails. they're 10-12" long X 1/4" thick. I carry 4. The longer plastic tent pegs work ok, as well. steve http://mail2web.com/ . *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
