Greetings, I use a Werner Molokai at 60 degrees and have no issues regardng wrists and such. My stroke angle is fairly high and the 60 seems to catch and exit well for me. This weekend, I decided to play around with a 90 degree feather angle by adjusting the paddle shaft and taping the ferrule. Kinda liked it! As long as I kept my elbows up my catch and exit sounded good. When I started doing radically edged reverse sweeps I did manage to get a good view of the sea life once! Beam winds seemed no more problematic than with the 60 degree angle. I've never had a paddle lesson but I've heard some of the hot rod kayakers refer to the old school of thought regarding right or left control hands. Furthermore, I've heard experienced paddlers say dedicated control hand technique is for the birds; the control hand should be whichever hand is applying power to the blade. I'm not sure I understand the difference between the two techniques. I don't think I have a control hand as my off-side hand is usually open to avoid hand cramps. My power side is usually being pulled more by my fingers than a full hand grasped around the shaft. I really don't know how one could paddle at 90 degrees with a control hand locked on the shaft without articulating the wrist rather dramatically. I would be interested in comments regarding control hand technique and the pros and cons of the same. Regards, ~Holmes New and Improved Yahoo!
