[Paddlewise] Hunkering Down and Waiting

Those of you who track hurricane activity (from the safety of their
computer/TV) know how busy the Atlantic has been this year, not to mention
typhoon season in the Pacific, too. While Jamaica awaits getting clobbered
tomorrow, it is interesting to note that the rowing community has had an
interesting time of it too.

Victoria's own Colin Angus has made it to Russia with his partner Tim, after
experiencing some real difficulties in the steep seas of the Bearing
Straits. They were towed back to Alaska, but eventually made it across.

One of Erwin Rommel's descendants wasn't so smart, attempting rowing across
the Atlantic with an extra-awful hurricane season imminent. He was rescued.
We won't call him the Ocean Fox.

Looks like Peter Bray, while he did cross the Atlantic a few years back in
his specifically-designed kayak, didn't fare so well with his mates in their
rowing craft:

Anyway, all this hurricane business got me thinking about some of the great
ocean crossings and attempted crossings by folding _open kayaks _by some of
the notable purists of the past century. A lot of us on Paddlewise love the
ocean and rough-water play, and there's lots of extreme sports fanatics out
there attempting amazing feats with their high-tech gear, but really, they
don't make paddlers like they used to.
