I think I may have just set the new World Kayak Speed Record. While paddling a 10 NM round trip coastal paddle this weekend with six other local club members, I turned my gps on to get a measure of how far it was from our start point to the 1/2 way point. I kept the gps in the deck pocket of my spray skirt and didn't look at it until we landed at the end of the day. According to the gps, we paddled 10 NM and averaged 3.5 knots. However, the maximum speed was 176 knots. We did surf a few waves and there were two surf launches and landings. I knew we were paddling at a decent pace that I estimated to be between 3.5 - knots, but I had no idea I was able to paddle into the three digit range in a Current Designs Gulfsteam. I have to believe it because electronics don't lie-----right?
