Correct my if I am wrong, but my understand is that ded reckoning is estimating you position and progress in the absence of identifiable landmarks? When you can judge you position be visualizing landmarks (or aids to navigation) then you are, in fact, piloting and can, if you'd like, take your bearings and fix your position.
