In many of these types of adventure race events it is against the rules 
to bring your own maps, for a variety of reasons.  There is a certain 
amount of trust that these race directors will do their job -- in this 
case they simply didn't.  Of course the individuals need to take 
responsibility for themselves but if you want to participate in these 
types of events you are always putting some amount of faith in the 
directors.
