Ded is a shortened form of the word deduced. It is not spelled with an   "a" ,
much the same as  Led  in Led Zeppelin.

Debatable.  "Ded" could be an alternative spelling of dead from a 
time when spelling was not standardized.  It could be "dead" as in 
"dead on".  There is no solid evidence as to its origins.

I'm not an english teacher, so I'll stick to the
spelling provided by David Burch in his book
Fundamentals of Kayak Navigation, 2nd Edition. He
spells it "dead reckoning."
