Hmmm.. sounds like a knotmeter is on the Christmas present wishlist, along
with a wind speed instrument as well.
Better still, I might as well go the whole way and set up full electronic
instrumentation, the stuff you see on keelboats. Just kidding.

Peter, you wrote:

champagne, silk lined lounge chairs, gold plated taps, Beluga caviar, plum
pudding and all the other essentials? If so when should I join you in an
expedition?"

No, I sail the best sort of yacht; owned by someone else who pays most of the
bills! I am just crew... what is caviar? The boat is a crusing yacht, from
the 50s, with displacement hull which explains slow speeds by today's
standards. But competed in numerous Sydney-Hobarts, Melbourne-Hobarts,
Sydney-Fijis through the late 50s and early 60s. Back when boats were built
out of wood to last more than one season..
BTW, I reckon that crazy Pittarak mate of yours would make a good article
for the mag..???

Thanks Michael for your GPS v Knotmeter explanation. Makes sense.

Cheers, PeterR , Wollongong.

In the US there are 2 knotmeters available. The one from Speedtech
(http://www.speedtech.com/asp/prodtype.asp?prodtype=35) is reportedly
being discontinued (according to retailsers of the speedmate on the surf
ski mailing list).

I've lost a few impellers and replacements are getting hard to find...
If you have multiple boats, and don't mind a little annoyance the
trailing wire model might be good - plus there's nothing to lose so you
don't have to worry about lost impellers.

If I were buying a new one I would look at the Nielson Kellerman model.

I've been told that the speedtech knotmeter was an OEM version built by
Nielson Kellerman, I don't know the truth to that. I plan to be buying
an NK impeller the next time I lose the impeller for my speedmate,
hopefully
the rumors are true and I have a continueing source of replacement
parts.

My SpeedTech knot meter has Nielson Kellerman printed on the back.
After it got waterlogged and died, I got a SpeedCoach directly from
Nielson Kellerman. It is very similarly constructed with many identical
parts. I have not used the NK unit yet, but it appears to have some
nice features. The impeller mount is different from the SpeedTech, but
the impeller itself is indistinguishable: same threading etc.

Thanks Nick. It's good to know that all I will need is the replacement
mount.

I really like the knotmeter for working on stroke efficiency. I
discovered that raising my top
hand a couple inches _found_ an extra .4 knots. I just need to learn to
keep my top
hand that high ALL the time, it tends to drop when I'm not paying
attention or get lazy.
