Not sure what you mean here but "lift" in the fluid dynamics sense does not 
always work in a vertical direction. Lift can act in any direction.

I have always considered "lift" a poor choice of words to describe the 
phenomenon. I like "magic" better. :-)

Interestingly enough almost any paddle can create lift so the Greenland 
style paddle does not have a monopoly on lift.
