Smart guy. His story reminds me of an acquaintance who has a cabin in the woods on the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Thor, who is in his lower eighties, went out one day without a compass to pick blueberries and became lost (I think it was foggy or overcast). When he realized he was lost, he made a nest under a tree, covered himself with leaves for warmth, and spent a night or two there. When the sun reappeared, he regained his bearings and found a nearby trail, where he soon ran into friends who were searching for him, much to everyone's relief. Once on the trail, though, I'm sure he would have found his way home, regardless. Moral: Don't panic and know your survival techniques.
