I paddled with Caveman John Gray about 8 years ago in NYC harbor. We went one of those regular trip on weekends to the Statue of Liberty. Gray was in town to receive an award from the Smithsonian or some such group. He and I teamed up in one of his double inflatables, one of his own design that was manufactured for him. He is a strong paddler having raced in Hawaii but we got caught in a strong counter current in front of Ellis Island, which was on the trip itinerary. It took all our might to get clear. A group of other kayakers were blown back and went around via the backside of Ellis to make any head way heading home to Manhattan. I also met David Williams a few times. My understanding is that Caveman was disenchanted with happenings in Thailand and left but that is based on what was said quite a few years ago. I lost touch with him awhile ago. ralph diaz *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
