As I've heard he and others explain, when your paddle goes vertical the water
splashes down like a hard rain. If your paddle is less than vertical a drip
ring may deflect water, but if it is vertical they are a waste of time. I don't
use them either.

I have quite a collection of drip rings. I now use them on PVC spare paddle
holders that I add to my front deck. I take 2 straight sections and 2 90 degree
elbows. I glue them together and use the drip rings on the forward part of
the straight sections. They raise the tubes up enough to withdraw or replace the
spare paddle without assistance, something you cannot do with standard
bungies. they also are softer on deck gelcoat than PVC.
