Waves as high as 50 feet expected to reach hawaii today where
a seldom-held big-wave surfing contest is being held (Quicksilver
In Memory of Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational is held only
when waves reach at least 20 feet).

G'Day Matt and Jackie,

Matt thanks for the advice it sounds like a useful criterion for the
decision to let go the paddle. Also thanks to all the others who answered my
post.

and high braces for anything over - does that sound right? Jackie how about
50 metres? :~)

All the best, PeterO

Even as an agnostic, I'm thinking the appropriate manouvre for a 50 meter-plus wave might be: let go of the paddle with both hands, and clasp them palm-to-palm in front of you...

There is another appropriate technique for waves this size. Pop your skirt,
bend forward and place your head as far between your knees as possible and
kiss your butt goodby.
