greetings paddlewise members. My name is Bart, and i am new to this forum. I have developed a love for sea kayaking over the past few years. with that love, has come some mixed emotion about having to leave my dog at home during my excellent adventures. i had taken her in a canoe before, but that really works better with two people. the local kayak dealers had no really good solutions. after some thought, and a flashback to hawaii 5-0, i developed the "kayrak". this can be seen at www.kayrak.ca . the outrigger and platform system worked really well, and i was able to take my 60 lb lab/newf cross dog on several weekend trips on Georgian bay before the season ended. I have taken her on day trips in 2 ft waves and 25 knot winds, and the kayak handles exceptionally well even under these conditions. there are many other uses for this design, and i would truly appreciate some feedback. Incidentally, my design has made the finals of a design competition, and i would really appreciate some voting support from the kayaking community. at the moment, the hummer tailgate design is in the lead, and this seems just so environmentally unfriendly. I look forward to hearing from you and learning what you think. I think you've got a product of real interest and pontential use to kayakers (one possilble application I don't see explored on your site is as an outrigger for sailing kayaks. I think you've propably put a lot of time and effort and heart into developing your product and commercializing it. But I also think it was inappropriate to post what amounted to essentially an ad for your product on this list. Your posting was not in response to any query from other members (How do I go kayaking with my dog? How do I carry my beer cooler accessibly while kayaking? ,etc.) And solicting votes for your invention in a contest is frankly cheesy. You may think I'm being a real hard ass, but I've seen too many web communities overrun by commerical plugs having to abandon their turf and head out for pastures new, only to find the bandits track them there too. What say the others on the list? Am I being the Grinch, with my heart too sizes too small? I think the idea is good. I also thought when reading it that the article was out of order here because I think it is strictly commercial. I think you exhibit disgusting crass commercialism. Hi Bart, A bit of background so you can understand why youbre coming in for such a public drubbing. On-line communities have the same ethos as real world non-commercial clubs. So posting an ad for your product on a chatgroup is not like buying an ad for it in a kayaking magazine, where readers expect to see ads and accept them as helping keep the cost of the magazine down. Itbs not even like posting an ad on a clubhouse bulletin board, where it can be read or ignored as desired. Itbs like joining a real world club, and at your first meeting, standing on a table in the middle of the room, calling for silence, and once the hubbub of a dozen enthusiastic conversations have died away and the entire club is looking at you expectantly, announcing, bLet me tell you about this great product Ibd like you to buyb&b Many of us on Paddlewise (myself included) have commercial ties to the kayaking industry. But webre here participating in our private capacities, for the pure love of the sport. With our insider knowledge, it can be really tempting to jump in with bthe answerb to a question. Itbs like being the kid in class with his hand up: bPick me! Pick me!b What I do is wait to see if someone else without a commercial interest will post an answer. If the thread thrashes along inconclusively for a long time, I may send a response only to Kirk (the list administrator) at kork4_at_email.com, identifying the answer and any potential bconflict of interestb and leaving it up to him to decide whether it should be posted on Paddlewise. That way, the damage is not done if itbs an inappropriate posting. If youbd like to know more about why webre so vehement about this, goggle up some old threads for bsponsonsb and bTimb on brec.boats.paddleb chatgroups. They look like the chatgroup equivalent of the Jerry Springer Show: high on entertainment (if you consider car crashes entertaining) and low on information. Youbve offered me a private apology off-line. Thank you. Ibd suggest you offer a public apology to he Paddlewise group. That, combined with whether you participate in the group in the future in a bprivateb way, will indicate whether or not you have a sincere non-commercial interest in the group. My response to his posting may be to copy his design. I've wanted to take my dog paddling. This looks like an easy project, and I can make one for MUCH less than $800 Canadian. Is that karma? *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
