I failed to mention a useful point (about grip width) the other day. I said that I usually instruct beginners to start with an "elbows at 90 degrees" grip, but also tell them that they should feel free to experiment once they get past their unfamiliarity with paddling. What I omitted was this: once we're out on the water on a tour (as opposed to an instructional session) and I notice that someone is having trouble maintaining grip width or symmetry, I'll suggest that they lay the paddle shaft across their lap, centered. Then I suggest that they grip the shaft just to the outside of the gunwales. This is generally effective and comfortable.
