Here is a humorous story involving me and two guys I barely know
making a run at bisecting Little Tybee Island, GA USA by kayak through
old cryptic slave dug canals. We started our adventure at dawn with a
rising tide because the canals only have water in them at high tide.
After making our way through to about the middle of the island we
decided to go back along the same route due to time limitations. Easier
said then done in the maze of dead end canals and slews. Kind of like
the Everglades.
The trip leader, Dan, turns to me and announces, "If I had a compass I
could tell you where we are". I look at him and smile until I realize
he is serious. I take out my compass and shoot a pair of back azimuths
off a water tower and distant bridge and show him where we are. He then
asks me if I want to lead the group back because he has no memory for
navigating." Ummm...sure!
It was a good thing I paid very close attention on the way out because
I suddenly found myself in charge. Keep in mind the trip leader is a
good guy. He simply threw me for a loop. His friend, who I had only
met that morning, tells me about the unintentional nights (plural) Dan
has spent in the grassy wetlands of Little Tybee slogging through the
mud with kayak in tow.
Dan was very calm the whole trip and good company . He really loves
being out in the grass and hammocks. It was a fun day and no real
danger present. Just the possibility of a long muddy slog home had the
tide run out.

As me and 12 other P'Wisers are planning a rendezvous at Tybee in a few
months, I REALLY, REALLY appreciate this story. Note to self... bring
lots of bread crumbs to mark our tracks :-)

Incidentally, this rendezvous is not "closed". Any P'Wisers who gain an
interest in it can join. Just send me a note and I'll add you to the
e-mail Distribution List I've built for passing info back and forth.
It's still early.. all we've done so far is agree to try to do a
rendezvous in late March or April, at Tybee. Still lots of time to get
involved.

Rick
