After John Kirk-Anderson's post about witnessing the destruction in Thailand (I think that's where he said), I went to the net and looked up one of the blog groups that had a video of the tsunami overtaking a beach and rushing inland, through a city. I don't have TV reception or cablevision, so other than the odd picture in the newspaper, I hadn't seen any of the endless news images I'm sure most of you must have been exposed to over the last week. Well, I'm awe struck. It was sickening to see the video of families and children playing on the beach, then suddenly everyone is swept away, with cars floating through the streets moments later. I've always had a morbid fascination with the sea and destruction, but the video really took me aback. And no, obviously there is no giant breaking wave as some have pointed out here on paddlewise, but the volume and movement off water was nothing like I've ever seen. Totally unreal. I'll be sending my donation this week. Don't know what else to do. Thanks Jackie for the charity links. http://bradboydston.blogspot.com/2004/12/tsunami-home-video.html Doug Lloyd Victoria BC *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
