You are right--wear begats wear.  Once you fix the hole as suggested, wrap the connection with duct tape.  That will help stop it from happening again.  The tape can be removed and reused many times.

Soller Paddles sells them for $1.27, dunno what size they are.  I just ordered some carbon fiber from Jon Soller, he's a good guy to deal with.
