[Paddlewise] Guidebooks - another slant for the rant

As a wannabe author of a guidebook, I have a slightly different slant on the guidebook discussion for Paddlewise. Gulf Coast Texas has hundreds of miles of paddleable water; and within a 75-100 mile radius of Houston several more hundred miles of inland water to paddle on. The Houston area is growing rapidly on a flat coastal plain with no geographic impediments until the Gulf of Mexico 50 miles to the south; and no mountains or other terrain that stops building in any other direction. There are 5 million people living in this area right now and many more on the way. I would like to see my area save SOME of the natural streambanks and encourage our "fattest city in the U.S." to enjoy the relaxation and exercise that is available to us on the water all around - but very few people know how to access the water or get started paddling. So, my objective is to show with photos and maps and tell with words, the natural beauty that is all around us. Some of it, like the banks of Buffalo Bayou flowing right through downtown Houston, will be obviously urban paddling, but it's worth doing and preserving, IMHO, and this will be my contribution to at least some natural preservation and encouraging much needed and worthwhile exercise.

Overnight camping opportunities are few and far between and day paddles will be the norm. So there you have it, an author who is trying to entice the masses. I don't expect to make much money on the proposition, and it will probably be 2 years until said book may appear - I'm not going to give up all my paddle time to write, nor will I give up my day job. See ya on the water!
