I have my canoes on the wall using simple shelf beackets. The steel
brackets are 20 inches, so I put 1x4 on them to the lengths needed
(varies). Then I mounted the brackets, 2 per boat, on 2x4 uprights that
rest on the floor and are secured to the wall.

The whole thing (4 canoes, 1 sea kayak) takes up the width of the widest
canoe. (The 2x4s don't actually move the canoes out fro the wall
because of course they are widest at the middle whereas the 2x4s are
toward the ends. The space behind the ends of the boats is used to
stand paddles, tools, stepladder, etc. etc.
