Getting rid of that old Kayak? Give me your old, your dusty, your huddled rental fleets. . . Okay that's cheesey, but seriously, "Word & Water Adventures" is a nonprofit, sea kayaking, adventure camp, in desperate need of your expedition capable, solo and tandem kayaks. Used, blems, rental fleets etc. are gladly accepted. (boats needing minor repairs are also gladly accepted). I live in Greenville, SC, so I'm pretty much limited to the southeast for pick up, but we may be able to arrange shipping. Boats will either be used in our fleet or sold and the money used to further the programs in other ways. All donations will be tax deductible. Please Contact Richard T. Magill (Director) at (864) 630-8400 or seakayaker32_at_wordandwater.us. I might consider helping if it were it a real charity or something like maybe Outward Bound. This looks like free stuff for middle class young people. Just because it is religious doesn't qualify it as a charity IMOH. I disapprove of this solicitation. "Cheesey" correctly characterizes it. Michael On Feb 2, 2005, at 8:41 AM, Richard T. Richard emailed me first and I approved the posting of the request, and manipulated the content to get the religious content as low as I could, I also put the geographic location in the subject so that those out of his area wouldn't bother with the post. I made the assumption that the paperwork (whatever the US codes are to allow income tax deductions) was in place based on Richards comment that "donations are deductible". I based my decision to allow the request because it was for a camp. Others on this list are involved with running non-profit trips/camps and I don't want to restrict their ability to make a similar request - assuming their tax deductible status is in place.... Maybe that wasn't the right decision, but it's one I made. I think there's no problem with posting such a solicitation for any group that gets kids kayaking. But I think the religious or political affiliation, if any, should be identified. Personally, I'd feel a bit conned if I gave a donation of cash or kayak gear to an organisation and only learned after the fact that it had a religious agenda. Ibd rather support organisations that let kids of any denomination or of none partake of the joys of paddling. Other Paddlewisers may well feel differently, but we all should have all the facts so that our decision to donate or not to donate to a particular group is informed consent. That all said, I'm Monday morning quarter-backing. I know you process and filter scads of mail on our behalf, and have to make quick decisions. Thanks for all your hard work. Cheers, Philip *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
