If you can't piece these links together just search on kayak at:
www.sptimes.com

The following link contains initial details of a tragic accident in North
Florida.

http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/F/FL_KAYAKERS_LOST_FLOL-SITE=FLPET&SECTION=STATE&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT

I am familiar with this area it is fairly remote, and although the water
is shallow, and there is protective cover behind islands and inside bays
it can get rough during high winds. Paddling a Canoe in this environment,
in even moderate weather is really a bad idea.

By Sunday wind gusts were up to 35 knots! Water temperature is the mid
60's, Air temps probably the mid 50's. They probably didn't have any
coldwater protective clothing.

I was attending the Sweetwater Kayak symposium about 100 miles south this
weekend and the weather was nasty. Windy and heavy rain. By Sunday the
organizers had to cancel all their morning on-water programs, and this was
in a sheltered area.

The following is the tour company that organized the trip, with a
description of the remote camping they were planning.
http://www.orrtreks.com/index2.htm

One can only assume they thought the motorized support vessel could handle
any problems.

Finally the following link from December describes the paddling trail, but
its hard to read after learning of these kid's deaths.

Here is another link to the same story. As Tim said it was nasty enough.

I couldn't help but notice that the trip description stressed that, for
"easy" paddling, paddlers would not have to carry any gear in their
kayaks. I'm sure the kayaks would have been more stable if they had been
carrying food and gear.

As I gather it, two boys in a canoe died.

There were also some kayaks on the trip.

There are links to some aditional articles and USCG report at Guillemot
forum: http://www.kayakforum.com/cgi-bin/Technique/indexh.cgi . Seems like
guides either didn't have VHF, or distress call wasn't placed in time (one
of guides has managed to reach his wife through cell phone, and she called
USCG).

I have just done some fibreglass work inside my Nordkapp, and with a
week-long trip starting in a couple of days I want to reduce the smell of
cured resin.

I will give it a good flush with water once the sanding is complete, and
leave the VCP hatch covers off until I go, but any suggestions on speeding
the process would be welcome.

Cheers

Try setting some open containers of vinegar in the boat for a few days. It
seems to knock out some smell. The bigger the surface area of liquid the
better.

No promises - I haven't tried this for resin odours, but a good way to remove odours from Tupperware containers, ect. is an overnight soaking with a solution of baking soda and water.

Cheers,

The resin will out-gas for a long time. The best you can probably do is
put the boat in the hot sun with all the hatches open to accelerate the
out-gassing. You could also put an old stinky wetsuit in there, it may
overpower the resin smell.

Good point Nick, my booties could almost be classified as weapons of mass
destruction.

Luckily we have had a very hot day here, and the boat has been sitting in
the sun all day, so that will have to do.

Cheers

Na, your booties aren't weapons of mass destruction - the fact you have been
led to believe they are was due to trumped-up intelligence and political
expediency. :-)

Now, my booties -- those are weapons of mass destruction (verified by UN
inspectors).

In truth (whatever that is anymore), my wife will not let them in the house
anymore (the booties). So, they sit outside all year long, no worries. Not
even the bugs will inhabit them - and here in BC, bugs inhabit everything
usually.

Unfortunately this seems to have become a common occurance for the
Sweetwater symposium. When I attended a couple of years ago most of the
on-water programs ended up getting cancelled near the end of the weekend
although it was nice to see that the rescues session still took place and
that the weather actually provided more realistic conditions for practicing
the self/assisted rescues. I believe I did the 3 star BCU training with
you (and Steve Maynard) and the wind was just started to blow pretty good
during our assessment.
