Here is a clear case of Cold Shock due to cold water immersion. Can
anyone in the NY area supply us with the water and air temperature
in the Great South Bay area this past Tuesday?

Thanks,
Chuck Sutherland

COLD SHOCK:

Here is how it happens! The victim is seen at the surface for a few
seconds or minutes and then disappears. His buddy on shore says
things about the cold water will never get him (the victim).
Outdoors writers are the only people that can talk to these
boaters--but it doesn't happen!

The kayakers get it----the rest of the general public boaters
DON'T!

Victim's Friend: "Since they haven't found a body yet, I'm kind
  of
hopeful."

Victim's Friend: "Even if he was 100 yards out, 300 yards out, he's
swimming back, I don't car how cold the water is - he has that much
energy in him. There's no way in hell he drowned out there."

But there is no sign of him. David Youmans and his friend were in a
canoe fishing yesterday afternoon. Police say the canoe tipped over
sending both men into the frigid cold water, where even the best of
swimmers can lose muscle control in minutes. They were not wearing
life jackets.

Just a reminder that even though the weather is begging us to go
outside to dress for the water...and wear your PFD :)
