The danish study guide for license is specific on this: "Radio silence periods are only mandatory on 2182 kHz." Warnings about storm and icing are sent adjacent to the silence periods on all bands including VHF and therefore the rules for silence are generally followed on work channels too. Recommended procedure in our waters is to establish contact using ch 16 and then switch to a working channel unless the communication is mayday, pan-pan or security. DSC could make this much easier but DSC seems to be totally out of reach on portable VHF receivers. I.e. the "full" version of DSC that makes VHF almost as easy to use as a cellphone. Last information was that the market wasn't willing to pay for this. BTW. New licensees must learn about DSC too.
