Last week PA Republican senator Rick Santorum proposed a bill that
would prohibit federal meteorologists from competing with companies
such as Surfline, AccuWeather and The Weather Channel. His proposal is
that the information that we already pay for through our taxes would
only be made available to corporations that would then RESELL the
information you!

As if you can only spend money on predicting storms and not learn that,
oops, some days are going to be warm and sunny.

This bill is vaguely worded but it may eliminate the weather forecast
available through most VHF radios, and the ability to get weather and
surf forecasts online. BTW AccuWeather is based in Sen. Santorum's home
state of Pennsylvania.

I really don't see the problem with this. All we have to do is carry a
satellite dish and watch The Weather Channel. The bonus is that we'll
be able to camp on isolated beaches and still keep up with Desperate
Houswives. The entertainment abilities of VHF have always been
marginal, at best. Except for the occasional dramatic rescue on
Channel 16.

Listening to Desperate Housewives over VHF seems like a nightmare indeed.
But VHF weather channels are available, and they are not US government
funded - at least, not all of them. Hopefully I'll still have Victoria and
Vancouver VHF weather channels in the event if that bill would've been
given a green light.
